Broadband network operator 5G Networks has acquired Melbourne Data Centre for $5.7 million.
The telco said the deal is part of its strategy to expand its infrastructure footprint and improve connectivity between its cloud offering and its broadband network.
5G Networks also expects to save some $3.8 million in data centre expenses while adding $3 million of annualised revenue by acquiring Melbourne Data Centre (MelbDC).
“We have completed another piece of the infrastructure puzzle today. 5G Networks can now offer direct and managed access from our own data centre all the way through to cloud and managed network services,” managing director Joe Demase said.
“We will now explore wholesaling the growing number of infrastructure products we can offer.”
MelbDC’s facility in Melbourne CBD can hold 330 racks and host 4.5 megawatts of equipment. 5G Networks said the facility is also operating at 40 percent capacity.

Prior to the deal, 5G Networks was a MelbDC customer, connecting a “significant proportion” of its fibre and wireless network to the Melbourne CBD facility.
This is 5G networks' fourth acquisition since going public in late 2017. It first acquired Telstra business partner Enspire and later added Melbourne-based Asia Pacific Telecommunications Group (APTel) for $6 million in March 2018. In August 2018 it shelled out $5.7 million for Inabox’s direct business.
